Announcements

PreK-5th Grade students participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event that raises funds for the American Heart Association to help children with weak hearts.  BBES students participated in jump rope activities and raised $190!

BBES students participated in a Sock Hop before the beginning of Spring Break.  Ms. Artis provided music while snacks and refreshments were provided to the students.

Congratulations to Amanda Glover for placing 3rd in the district science fair on February 15th.  Amanda will be competing in the regional science fair next!

The Kindergarten Team, Ms. Young/Ms. Houser, Ms. Hamilton/Ms. Backmon, & Ms. Artis/Mrs. Griffin, hosted a fun and engaging family night for their students' families.  The kindergarten students sang and performed.  The teachers shared important information with the audience.  Several participants received door prizes.  Great job, kindergarten team!

On March 7, 2012, South Carolina schools celebrated the first annual "Walk to/at School" day.  This event teaches students the importance of trying to walk more or drive less.  Walking more and driving less improves health through exercise, reduces pollution, and reduces traffic and accidents.  BBES students participated during their PE classes by walking on the middle/high school track.

On Friday, March 2, 2012, BBES was visited by Mrs. Jessie Hayward.  Mrs. Heyward is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.  Mrs. Heyward read "Green Eggs and Ham to our early childhood classes.

On Thursday, March 1, 2012, BBES was visited by Mr. Henry Dyson Jr.  Mr. Dyson is a local author who has written two books about growing up in rural South Carolina.

Congratulations to the 12 first graders who participated in the Active Gamecock Physical Activity program!  Students were offered free tickets to USC basketball games in return for submitting logs that kept track of their daily physical activity.

Congratulations to Telicia Benjamin for placing 3rd in the District Spelling Bee!  Other participants were Nakosi McDuffie who placed with and Andre'a Sweeper.

Bethune-Bowman Elementary celebrated the hard work and achievement of students during the February 8, 2012 Second Quarter Honors and Awards Program held in the Bethune-Bowman Middle/High School gymnasium.  Principal's List and A-B Honor Roll students were recognized with certificates and plaques in front of the student body, teachers, and family members attending the program.

Bethune-Bowman Elementary School received a $40,000 Orangeburg County First Steps Grant for the Early Steps to School Success Program to serve 50 children ages 0-5.  The purpose of the program is to help families prepare their children for immediate success when they become an enrolled student at Bethune-Bowman Elementary School.  BBES welcomes Mrs. LaSonya Colter as the Early Childhood Coordinator.

Briennah Murray, the winner of BBES's Character Counts Essay contest, placed second in the district and was awarded with a $25 gift card.  Congratulations Briennah!  BBES is proud of you!

Bethune-Bowman Elementary is blessed with future scientists who showed their knowledge and enthusiasm for science at the science fair on January 11, 2012.  We truly appreciate the time and effort that each participant made.  Congratulations to the science fair winners!

The Bethune-Bowman Elementary School faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members will work together this year to reach our academic goals.
1. 90 % of our students will meet or exceed standards in writing.
2. 90 % of our students will meet or exceed standards in reading.
3. 85 % of our students will meet or exceed standards in mathematics.
4. 80 % of our students will meet or exceed standards in science.
5. 80 % of our students will meet or exceed standards in social studies.
 
 

The annual Economic Poster Contest sponsored by BB&T challenged students to create a picture that demonstrates their understanding of economic concepts.  400 students from kindergarten through 8th grade participated and 16 winners were chosen to receive a $50 savings bond.  Our very own Sandrea Williams was selected as one of the winners.  Congratulations Sandrea!  You represent Bethune-Bowman Elementary School well and we are all so proud of you!


BBE Students Participate in the Book-It! National Reading Incentive Program

Book-It! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and Pizza Hut Pizza. Book It! is simple for the teachers to use, flexible because goals match reading ability, and fun because achieving a goal is a great reason to celebrate. Book It! was created in 1985 and currently reaches over 10 million students annually.
